About Father Mike

Father Michael Maslowsky is the parish priest at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon. He was born in Omaha Nebraska and was educated in schools throughout the United States and the Far East. He graduated from Kubasaki High School in Naha, Japan. Following his graduation from high school, Father Mike attended Kalamazoo College in Michigan and graduated with a major in history.

Originally Father Mike's career choice was law. He attended Northwestern Law School in Portland, Oregon and became an attorney with the firm Miller, Nash, Wiener, Hager & Carlsen in Portland. He practiced as an attorney for 3 years and then reached a major turning point in his life. He decided to leave the practice of law and become a Catholic Priest. He then attended the Gregorian University in Rome and was ordained in 1987. In 1989 he returned to Rome for a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. Upon completion of his doctorate, Father Mike returned to Portland and became the Director of the office of Ministry Formation and Director of the Department of Pastoral Services for the Archdiocese of Portland. In 1993 he became pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Portland.

When Father Maslowsky came to St. Anthony Parish, his assignment was to close the church because of the declining attendance and the inadequate facilities. Instead of closing it, Father Mike worked to turn the parish around and improve its facilities. As a result of his efforts, the original church and school which were located there were torn down and the five acre site was developed into a residential community which provides affordable housing and care options for seniors including 16 units for independent senior housing, 84 assisted living units, and 24 Alzheimerâs residences. At the heart of St. Anthony village stands St. Anthony Catholic Church and Parish Hall. St. Anthony Village has over 135 residents and has become a model for similar developments in other parishes in Oregon. Currently, Father Mike serves as president of St. Anthony Village Enterprise, a non-profit corporation, which has developed not only St. Anthony Village, but also is now in the process of developing four other villages in Oregon

Father Maslowsky provides commentary on the local ABC station every week in a program called "A Moment with Father Mike". He has also appeared on a number of the television talk shows, including ABCâs 20/20, The Geraldo Rivera Show, Good Morning America, Fox News, and Hannity and Colmes. He has hosted a radio call-in talk show called A Question of Faith, as well as an archdiocesan TV series called Faces of Faith.

Despite his many responsibilities, Father Mike has found time to teach the RCIA class at St. Anthony Church. The lectures, which are available on this web site are from his RCIA class taught in the fall of the year 2000 and the spring of 2001. Several homilies or sermons delivered by Father Mike at St. Anthony Church during this time period are also included in this website.
